Modern Slavery
Is not a distant Issue.
This is happening now, across the world and here in Australia.

The Global Reality.
- An estimated 50 million people are living in modern slavery.
- More than 12 million are children.
- Women and girls make up over half of all victims
Modern slavery is not confined to developing nations. More than half of forced labour occurs in middle-and high-income countries. INCLUDING AUSTRALIA.

Modern Slavery
Is hidden in supply chains, workplaces, homes, and communities. It survives in silence. And it continues wherever vulnerability is ignored.
Modern slavery is an umbrella term used to describe situations where a person or group uses their power over another to control or use them for their own benefit. It takes away someone’s freedom to make choices for themselves.
It includes:
• Human trafficking
• Forced labour
• Child labour
• Forced marriage
• Debt bondage
• Sexual exploitation
• Servitude
Modern slavery survives in silence.
Ending it requires courage.
Every person deserves:
Modern Slavery in Australia
Yes, it is happening here.
- Around 41,000 people in Australia are believed to be living in modern slavery conditions at any given time.
- For every victim detected, four go undetected.
- In 2024-25, the Australian Federal Police received 371 reports of suspected modern slavery. The majority of these reports related to forced marriage, sexual servitude or exit trafficking.
Who is most vulnerable?
• Migrant workers and temporary visa holders
• Women and girls facing forced marriage
• People working in isolated or informal environments
• Individuals with limited access to legal protection
Modern slavery thrives where power is unequal and voices are silenced.
Australia’s Response
And Its Limits
The Modern Slavery Act 2018 (NSW) and (Cth) requires governments and large businesses to report on modern slavery risks within their operations and supply chains. Transparency matters. Accountability matters.
In 2023, the Office of the Anti-Slavery Commissioner was established to strengthen national coordination, promote compliance, and advocate for victim-survivors.
These are important steps.
But legislation alone will not end exploitation. Prevention requires awareness. Protection requires community responsibility. Change requires action.
Prevention Starts Early
Modern slavery begins with vulnerability, poverty, inequality, lack of education, and economic insecurity.
Every Daughter Matters believes education is protection.
- When people are educated, they are less vulnerable to exploitation.
- When communities are informed, they are better equipped to intervene.
- When silence is broken, risk is reduced.
Through our presentations in schools, churches, and community groups across Australia, we bring the realities of modern slavery into the open. We educate people about forced marriage and exploitation, equip them to recognise warning signs, and empower them to become advocates for prevention.
Awareness disrupts vulnerability.
Education builds resilience.
What can you do?
Modern Slavery is preventable — but only if we refuse to ignore it.
