A Message from our Founder

I’m Ross Nancarrow, an Aussie change-maker passionate about stopping human trafficking and bringing hope where it’s needed most. My journey began after many years working in Nepal, hearing far too many horrific stories of abuse against young women and girls.

I’ll never forget standing at a dusty border crossing, realising: “There is something fundamentally wrong with humanity for this to be happening. Somebody needs to do something.” From that moment, my mission became clear: protect the vulnerable and empower communities.

Since then, I’ve helped grow Every Daughter Matters from a bold idea into a frontline force. Whether speaking in a rural Nepali village, presenting at a conference, or crafting a fundraising campaign, I lead with compassion, vision, and a drive for lasting impact.

Today I wear many hats: CEO, Executive Director, advocate, mentor, husband, and my favourite of all: proud Grandpa – but they all point to one goal: freedom and human rights for every daughter.

Every Daughter Matters

Every Daughter Matters is an Australian not-for-profit dedicated to preventing the trafficking of Nepali girls. We do this through border interceptions, emergency shelters, safe homes, and long-term empowerment. We have been working in the anti-trafficking space since March, 2020.

Together with our partners at Aashish Social Service Nepal (ASSN) our work is fuelled by a dedicated team in Australia whose compassion, skill, and steadfast commitment make every interception and rescue possible.

Aashish Social Service Nepal (ASSN), is a Nepali NGO which has been registered with the Social Welfare Council of Nepal since 2006. ASSN’s CEO is Yubaraj B.K. They have a proven track record in the anti-trafficking space, recently acknowledged by an award for their border surveillance work by the Inspector General of Nepal’s Police force.

FAQ’s

Got a question?

What does trafficking look like in Nepal?

Nepali girls are often lured by false promises of jobs, education, or marriage. Many come from remote areas and are unaware of the danger. Once taken across the border, they can disappear into forced labour or exploitation.

What happens when a girl is intercepted at the border?

She is taken to an emergency shelter where she receives food, rest, medical care, trauma-informed support, and help contacting her family. The goal is immediate safety and dignity.

What support do safe homes provide?

For girls who cannot safely return home, our safe homes offer long-term care, education, counselling, skill-building, and loving community—run by trained Nepali staff, many of whom are survivors themselves.

Why is indigenisation and cultural empowerment so important?

Real, lasting change happens when local people lead. That’s why all EDM programs are run by Nepali teams who understand the culture, language, and lived realities. We also help restore cultural dignity, which trafficking seeks to erase.

The Ripple Effect

Every Daughter Matter’s work has a far-reaching impact, not only in terms of rescuing and rehabilitating individual survivors but also in creating broader systemic changes that protect girls at risk and prevent trafficking.

From the empowerment of girls through education and skills training to advocating for legal reforms, EDM’s holistic approach is empowering individuals, transforming communities and enabling local law enforcement to take a united stand against this injustice.

We are Survivor-Centred

Our Anti-Trafficking Approach

Our anti-trafficking programs and initiatives address both the prevention of trafficking and the protection of those at risk or already affected by trafficking.

In the fight against human trafficking, interception is our most powerful weapon – stopping abuse before it begins. By acting at the critical moment, we prevent a lifetime of exploitation and open the door to safety, dignity, and hope.

Key Focus Areas

How Every Daughter Matters works with ASSN’s Anti-Trafficking Work

Key Focus Areas in EDM / ASSN’s Anti-Trafficking Work

Raising Awareness About Trafficking Risks
Prevention through Education: EDM/ASSN work to inform girls and young women, families, and communities about the dangers of trafficking. This involves educating them on how trafficking networks operate, what signs to look out for, and how traffickers lure vulnerable girls. Awareness campaigns are conducted at Border locations, through workshops, and local outreach initiatives.

Targeting At-Risk Communities: EDM/ASSN’s educational materials are tailored to communities that are particularly vulnerable to trafficking, such as low-income areas, migrant populations, and communities with limited access to education or legal protections.

Support for Survivors of Human Trafficking

Safe Spaces and Shelters: EDM/ASSN create safe spaces for girls who have been rescued from trafficking or are at risk. These safe spaces provide immediate emergency shelter, food, medical care, and psychological counselling.

Holistic Rehabilitation Programs: EDM/ASSN provide comprehensive support to trafficking survivors, including legal aid, reintegration programs, and vocational training. These services are designed to help survivors rebuild their lives, regain confidence, and acquire skills that will help them lead independent lives.

Collaboration with Law Enforcement

Partnership with Authorities: Our partner ASSN works closely with law enforcement and government agencies to strengthen the legal response to trafficking. This includes supporting efforts to improve laws, enhance victim protections, and ensure traffickers are brought to justice.
Training for Law Enforcement: ASSN has been involved with specialised training for police officers, and Interpol to better recognize trafficking indicators, handle trafficking cases with sensitivity, and assist victims effectively.

Empowerment of Vulnerable Girls and Communities

Building Resilience: Through education, mentorship, and skills development, EDM/ASSN work to empower girls and young women with the tools they need to protect themselves from trafficking. This includes providing them with knowledge about their rights, personal safety strategies, and access to resources.
Economic Empowerment: By providing girls with education, vocational training, and opportunities for financial independence, EDM/ASSN helps reduce the economic vulnerabilities that traffickers often exploit. Economic empowerment can be one of the most effective tools in combating trafficking, as girls who are financially stable are less likely to fall victim to trafficking schemes.

Amira’s Story:

A young girl, Amira, who had limited education and lived in desperate poverty was trafficked from a rural village to a large city under the false promise of a job as a domestic worker. She was isolated and forced into exploitative labour in a household. After months of abuse, she managed to contact EDM’s Nepali partner, Aashish Social Service Nepal (ASSN) through the help of a kind neighbour, which eventually led to her rescue.

Our Role:

Once rescued, Amira was referred to EDM/ASSN’s emergency shelter, where she received immediate medical care and emotional support. She had experienced physical abuse, mental trauma, and was isolated from her family, but our team provided comprehensive rehabilitation services. This included counselling, legal assistance to press charges against her traffickers, and vocational training.

Outcome:

Amira’s case was taken to court, and the traffickers were convicted. ASSN helped her reconnect with her family and empowered her to pursue further education in a safe environment. Today, she is studying to become a social worker, hoping to support others who’ve faced the same horrors. Her story is one of resilience and the transformative power of comprehensive survivor care.
