How did EDM get started?

EDM was founded after a powerful encounter with trafficking survivors in 2019. Moved by their stories, Ross Nancarrow launched the organisation to create a sustainable, local-led response to human trafficking.

What does trafficking look like in Nepal?

Nepali girls are often lured by false promises of jobs, education, or marriage. Many come from remote areas and are unaware of the danger. Once taken across the border, they can disappear into forced labour or exploitation.

What happens when a girl is intercepted at the border?

She is taken to an emergency shelter where she receives food, rest, medical care, trauma-informed support, and help contacting her family. The goal is immediate safety and dignity.

What support do safe homes provide?

For girls who cannot safely return home, our safe homes offer long-term care, education, counselling, skill-building, and loving community—run by trained Nepali staff, many of whom are survivors themselves.

Why is indigenisation and cultural empowerment so important?

Real, lasting change happens when local people lead. That’s why all EDM programs are run by Nepali teams who understand the culture, language, and lived realities. We also help restore cultural dignity, which trafficking seeks to erase.

What is Human Trafficking? It’s the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of people through force, fraud or deception, with the aim of exploiting them for profit.

Human trafficking is a thriving business. It accounts for USD 236 billion a year world-wide with women and girls making up 71% of all modern slavery victims.

Why focus on Nepal?

The 1,758 kilometre border between Nepal and India has always been known as one of the busiest human trafficking gateways in the world.

Approximately 20,000 young Nepali women and children go missing across the border every single year and 1.5 million Nepalis are at risk of human trafficking.
